A woman has sustained life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car in Melbourne’s CBD on Thursday morning.

She was walking along Flinders St, near the intersection with Highlander Lane, at around 10am when she was struck by the vehicle.

She was taken to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The driver of the car was arrested by police at the scene.

A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed the 33-year-old Caulfield man has been taken into custody but has not been charged.

The spokesperson said he is continuing to assist officers with their inquiries.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and have set up a crime scene on Flinders St. Crews from the State Emergency Service are on site to provide assistance in setting up the crime scene protection tents.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are expected to attend the scene.

Photos show the SES crews have created a protective tent to shield the vehicle, which will be examined thoroughly by the investigators.

Anyone who saw the collision of the dark Mazda and the pedestrian should contact police immediately.

Flinders St in Melbourne’s city centre will remain closed eastbound between King and William Street as police carry out their investigation. Drivers are asked to take alternative routes.

Tram services on routes 70 and 75 have resumed normal service, following a brief disruption.
